RAM Issues Press Statement on New COVID-19 Lockdown Restrictions

In response to the latest government-imposed COVID-19 lockdown restrictions, the Restaurant Association of Maldives (RAM) has released a press statement highlighting the severe impact these measures will have on restaurants and cafés nationwide. With the industry still recovering from previous lockdowns and economic downturns, RAM urges the government to consider alternative solutions that would allow food service businesses to continue operating safely.

The statement emphasizes that restaurants are already adhering to stringent health and safety guidelines, and further restrictions could lead to business closures and job losses. RAM calls for a more balanced approach, suggesting that outdoor dining and take-away services be allowed to continue under specific health protocols.

“While we understand the need for public health measures, we cannot overlook the fact that the restaurant sector is one of the hardest hit by these lockdowns,” RAM’s statement reads. “It is crucial to find a middle ground that protects public health while also enabling businesses to survive.”

RAM also pointed to the importance of financial support and relief packages for restaurant owners, advocating for rent subsidies, tax deferrals, and grants to help keep businesses afloat during the lockdown period. The association plans to work closely with the government to develop strategies that will ensure both public safety and the economic sustainability of the restaurant industry.
